The 21st Century Cures Act received bipartisan support from both houses of Congress, with 88 percent of legislators voting in favor of the act. Christopher Topoleski, the ASHP’s director of federal legislative affairs, stated the ASHP is largely in favor of the act, especially the increase in funding for the “Cancer Moonshot” ($1.8 billion) and responses to opioid abuse at the state level ($1 billion). The act also boosts funding for the National Institutes of Health by $4.8 billion.
Lastly, the ASHP appreciates that the Cures Act will increase electronic health record use and streamline the approval of antimicrobial drugs for certain populations, in addition to expanding telehealth services.
